I have been going to Mike’s Bike Shop since at least the early 2000s when it was on Champlain St. The service was excellent and eager to support XC skiers even though there were very few of us. I am an Adventurer, Former Professional Cyclist, Trail Runner and Backcountry Skier. I own and operate Fast Forward Athletics, a Personal Training and Endurance Coaching Business, where I work to help prepare New Brunswick athletes and clients of all levels for their own individual fitness objectives and adventures.

Where do you live?  I am originally from Calgary, Alberta, but have now called Dieppe, NB my home for the past 13 years.

What do you train/compete in?  I compete mainly in Cycling Events and Ultra marathon/ Trail Running Races. I hope to compete in both the Gravel Racing and Bikepacking scene in the near future!

How/Are you staying fit, healthy, and happy during this pandemic?
The main thing is staying adventurous, but now exploring closer to home! I am always exploring new roads and new trails as much as I can and we have plenty of land to explore in NB! This year I bought a Wahoo Kickr Smart Trainer and it has been an absolute game changer for me in terms of being time efficient and building fitness for summer exploring (and hopefully racing soon enough J).

Which strengths do you believe you have that make you a great athletic ambassador?  Honestly, it`s my life and livelihood. I make a living helping others live a fitter, happier and healthier lifestyle and I am continually trying to build our athletic community. The more people I can motivate to ride bikes, ski, run trails, lift weights the better! A fit community is a better community and I just want that to continue to grow!

What is your must-have training accessory?  This year, it`s been my Wahoo Kickr Smart Trainer, I have put in many hours and I feel a huge difference in fitness! Beyond that my Garmin Fenix GPS, it has saved me many times when I am deep in the woods, off-trail, racing the sunset along with my Black Diamond Headlamp!

Why have you agreed to represent Mike’s Bike Shop?  Mike`s Bike Shop has everything covered for all of the adventures myself and my family does outdoors. Bikes, Skis, Clothing and every accessory imaginable. But the main reason, is the community Mike`s Bike Shop has helped to build. In the 13 years since I have lived in Dieppe, it has transformed into a totally rad outdoor community and Mike`s Bike Shop is a big reason for that. It`s becoming part of our local culture and I want that to continue. Our local trail systems are becoming amazing and the more this community of outdoor enthusiasts grows, the more this will continue to expand! Shop local!

What do you train/compete in? I like to call myself a triathlete. I also ride Cycle Cross, MTB, Fat Bike and of course road. I enjoy skate skiing, snowshoeing and hiking in the winter. This winter I also started doing some ice climbing. I do as much as I can to be outdoors all year round. Most of my TV time is on my trainer while hitting the TrainerRoad workouts.

Who is your favourite sports hero? Tom Brady, because of what he has accomplished and how long he has been able to play his sport.

What is the best part about competing? What I love about competing is the atmosphere. When people are lining the course and cheering for everyone. I have to admit that when I race longer course triathlon like 70.3 and IRONMAN, the FINISH LINE is a happy place to be.

What is your favourite sports quote? I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfilment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious. Vince Lombardi

Who do you wish was watching you compete at all your events? My mom for sure. She never got to see me race and passed away in 2019. I even raced the PEI Marathon a number of years ago because she lived there and could be at the finish line. Something came up that day and she couldn’t make it. I truly believe she hasn’t missed an event since he passing. I also love to have my kids cheer me on. Max and Olivia have been at many races and always bring a smile to my face when I see them on the course.

What is your favourite song to listen to – to get you pumped for competing? The one that brings a smile to my face is Alive by Edwin. This song makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up every single time.

What is your favourite sports movie? This is a hard one. There are so many. The one that comes to my mind first is Rudy. That guy never gave up on his dream and finally made it on to the field of play at Notre Dame.

What do you see yourself accomplishing in five to ten years? I hope that I am still able to do all the fun things that I do today that I feel help keep my young.

How/Are you staying fit, healthy, and happy during this pandemic? I made the most out of it while the gyms and pools were closed. I worked on my weaknesses. In 2016 I had a bad crash on my cycle cross bike when I hit ice on a wooden bridge. I broke my femoral head also known as the hip to most. I have some hardware in there now and my running had never really made it back to the level I was at prior to my crash. Over the summer I focused on running and made a fair comeback. I don’t think I’ll ever run a 1:26 half marathon again, but I felt like I was almost there.

What do you believe to be one of your weaknesses and what are you doing to improve it? Kryptonite… nope, ICE. I have had a fear of ice since the bike crash that had me off my feet for 4 months. I do not like to be stuck inside. This winter I decided to try vertical ice. Not as bad.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of sport? I guess I don’t really have any time outside of sport. Hiking is a sport right?

Which strengths do you believe you have that make you a great athletic ambassador? I love to share sport and encourage others to get out and get active. I believe we can do almost all of our sports in one way or another no matter the time or the weather. If you have the right gear you can make it happen most of the time.

What is your must-have training accessory? The training accessory that was a game changer for me was the Wahoo Kickr. I have been doing my indoor training on the Kickr with TrainerRoad since 2014. I have had every version and I am currently riding on the latest version 5.

What clubs, teams, or other extracurricular activities were you involved in during high school? You are going to love this one… I was on the Harrison Trimble curling team in High School. Yup… Curling. ICE again.

Why have you agreed to represent Mike’s Bike Shop? I’ve been on the team since 2014 representing Triathlon in general. I believe that Mike’s Bike Shop carries the best brands in the sports we support. I ride the Giant Trinity Advance Pro 1 with Di2 for triathlon and have a number of Trek bikes for all my other flavours. I also have an Arc’teryx fetish and collection that keeps growing. I like to be dry and warm.
